STAGES St. Louis |
Overview
STAGES ST. LOUIS is a professional, not-for-profit theatre company dedicated to producing the indigenous American art form of musical theatre – an art form which combines the three disciplines of singing, acting and dancing. STAGES is firmly committed to the employment and development of the St. Louis artist and, by providing education and outreach programs, to enriching the cultural milieu of the community.
STAGES ST. LOUIS operates year round with a staff of twelve. A full-time seasonal company operates from May to October and offers 120 performances in the 380-seat Robert G. Reim Theatre at the Kirkwood Civic Center. Performers are cast from auditions in both St. Louis and New York. STAGES is the top employer of local union actors and provides more annual workweeks than any other St. Louis theatre company.
The new mission of STAGES ST. LOUIS is to become the leading Midwestern performing arts center for musical theatre performance and education.
History
STAGES ST. LOUIS was co-founded by St. Louisan Michael Hamilton and New York native Jack Lane, who met while working on a production of WEST SIDE STORY in 1982 and discovered their mutual ambition of opening a musical theatre company. The 1987 inaugural season of DAMES AT SEAS, SNOOPY!!! and I DO! I DO! had a total season attendance of 3,000 patrons. By the 2002 season, that number mushroomed to over 45,000 patrons. Similarly, the number of season subscribers in 1987 was 200 and, heading into the 2003 season, subscriptions are expected to top 12,000. The first season featured an acting company of seven and, for 2002, the company numbered 44 adults and 23 children. Finally, the 1987 operating budget was $50,000 and, in 2003, stands at $2.5 million.
By the late 1990s it became obvious that STAGES was quickly outgrowing its home. In order to accommodate consistent capacity audiences, a desire among the staff to continue creatively expanding productions, and increasing requests from the St. Louis community for a professional arts education program, a plan was developed for the STAGES ST. LOUIS Performing Arts Center. After an arduous search by STAGES for a site, the City of Chesterfield, Missouri was chosen.
