Truman Drama has enjoyed a reputation of theatrical excellence for quite some time and is regarded as one of the premiere theatre schools in the United States. It has won countless awards at festivals but its mission statement is a simple one...to endeavor to promote educational theatre at the secondary school level and provide the opportunity for all students to participate in the theatre art.
The drama club has existed since the school's inception in 1959. Lou Volpe became it's sponsor in 1972 and has been there since. During that time, he and his staff have produced over 30 musicals including MTI favorites:
- "Jekyll and Hyde" -scheduled for March 2003
- "Les Miserables" (pilot production) 2001/02
- "Working" - 2001
- "Jesus Christ Superstar" - 2000
- "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" 1999
"Children of Eden"- The recipient of the 1998 MTI "Excellence in Musical Theatre" award.
- "The Who's Tommy" - 1997
- "Godspell" 1996
- "Into the Woods" 1995
- "Jesus Christ Superstar" 1994
"Once On This Island" 1993
- "Little Shop of Horrors" 1991
- "Godspell" 1990
- "West Side Story" 1988
- "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" 1987
- "Guys and Dolls" 1986
- "Godspell" 1982
- "Pippin" 1980
- "Godspell" 1977
The club also produces a number of dramas, comedies and one acts during the year. In 1997 the club introduced a trilogy of performance art pieces that they have originated. Based on elements such as good, evil, art, religion, history, etc. The first piece "Genesis" was presented at the Pennsylvania Thespian Conference and was extremely well received. Ostensibly based on the first book of the bible, the play examined the genesis of mankind to the present. The second piece "Confronting Guernica" examined man's relationship to art and was influenced by the Picasso painting. The third and final piece (still untitled) has not been completed and is still in the creative process.
In 1993 it's production of "Telemachus Clay" was presented on the main stage at the International Thespian Festival at Ball State University in Indiana. The club has also presented main stages at festivals at William and Mary and The University of Maryland. In 2000 the club was invited to present a main stage production of "The Cockfighter" at an international theatre festival in Canada and has been invited to the fringe festival in Scotland.
