Started in 1990 as Bel Air High School's extra-curricular drama program, The Bel Air Drama Company (BADC) has grown from a small group of 15 - 20 interested students to a program that includes 100+ students throughout each school year. Our program is designed to not only foster a love for theatre arts and produce shows of the highest quality, but also to cultivate life skills such as teamwork, time management and responsibility. Through the past 15 years, the Bel Air Drama Company has grown to reach out to not only our students, but our school, parents and community as well.
The BADC tries to maintain a level of excellence by choosing productions that are demanding and challenging. We traditionally perform a dramatic production in the Fall and a Spring Musical. We also strive to choose plays or playwrights that are considered classics or have literary merit. Recently, the BADC has attempted to perform in unique or innovative ways. In the Fall of 2003, we produced 2 productions at once on alternating nights (Steel Magnolias and The Odd Couple). This served to open up opportunities to more students than one production alone. This year, three major productions are planned.
The BADC has performed at the Maryland State Theatre Festival numerous times since 1994 (1984, Godspell, The Odd Couple)
We have sent over 30 students to fine arts schools to continue their theatrical training. Many of our students return to "give-back" to the program that first developed their love of the craft. (Including current Company Director Paul "Chuck" Bowden). The Bel Air Drama Company involves students from all over the school. An all inclusive policy allows for students with special needs, athletes, artists and musicians to all participate. We currently have over 100 students involved with the productions each year.
Getting the School Community involved is important to the BADC. We currently obtain assistance in our productions from not only our Music Department, but many other teachers as well. (Costuming, Art, Technical Work) We have also been successful in getting staff members to perform with the students in small cameo roles on stage. The Drama group is well respected as one of the major organizations within Bel Air High School. Students consider it a privilege to see the productions and an honor to participate in the group.
We are most proud of our recent Production of Les Miserables® School Edition produced in the spring of 2005.
