Operating since 1955, North Shore Music Theatre’s mission is to increase the awareness, significance and celebration of musical theater and the performing arts through superb entertainment and education programs. A unique 1,500 seat theater-in-the-round located in Beverly, MA, NSMT is the largest non-profit producing theater in New England, with approximately 350,000 patrons annually. With Artistic Director and Executive Producer Jon Kimbell at the helm for the past 22 years, NSMT has gained a national and regional reputation for artistic achievement, specifically in the areas of developing new works and providing outstanding theater arts and education programs. NSMT has received numerous industry awards including The Elliot Norton Award, The Rosetta Le Noire Award from Actors’ Equity, and The Moss Hart Award. NSMT annually produces a six musical subscription series, a production of A Christmas Carol and an acclaimed concert series. With its celebrated Theatre for Young Audiences program and year-round classes for children and adults, NSMT has become one of the region’s leading providers of theater arts and education.
In July of 2005, while in the midst of celebrating its 50th Anniversary that began with the April regional premiere of Thoroughly Modern Millie, North Shore Music Theatre experienced a devastating accidental electrical fire that destroyed the Theatre’s stage, orchestra pit, lighting and sound equipment and interior, including all 1,800 seats. As a result of the extensive fire, smoke and water damage, NSMT was forced to cancel the entire run of Cinderella, all the Children’s Summer Musicals, as well as all concerts for the remainder of the season. The Theatre also moved two productions to Boston’s Shubert Theatre. In a span of 110 days, the entire interior of the theater, including seats, stage lifts, ceiling panels and insulation, was replaced. The theater reopened on November 1, 2005 with a production of The Full Monty.
