Peoria Players Theatre is a non-profit community theatre that originated on October 6, 1919 in Peoria, Illinois and has been in continuous operation since. Peoria Players Theatre is the nation’s fourth longest continuously-running community theatre, and the longest in the state of Illinois. It is our continuing goal to provide culturally inclusive live theatrical entertainment to our area, as well as give the many talented individuals in the area a creative outlet and the opportunity to perform and grow in a safe, artistically challenging environment.
Peoria Players constantly strives to provide the community — both audiences and performers — with culturally-enriching material, including new and ground-breaking shows, as well as the traditional favorites. We encourage participation from many diverse segments of the community, having staged such shows as Children of a Lesser God, Fences, The Boys Next Door, The King and I, Dreamgirls, and Fiddler on the Roof, and we always welcome opportunities to expand our technical horizons in the areas of sets, costumes, lighting, makeup, and special effects.
To ensure the future and continuation of the arts in our community, we produce our Summer Youth Theatre (now celebrating its 10th anniversary), designed to encourage the talents of teens ages 14 to 20 in all areas of the theatre, including performance, technical, stage management, and orchestration. We have also produced original concepts written by local artists including our King Henry’s Christmas Feast, Showstoppers Musical Revue, and an intergenerational workshop and one-acts (shows that were authored by local talents and combined youth and seniors working together in the productions).
We at Peoria Players Theatre are currently enjoying our 87th consecutive season and for the sixth year in a row have been name by the Peoria Journal Star readers as "The Readers Choice" for Favorite Community Theater.
The mission of Peoria Players Theatre is
- the promotion and presentation of live theatrical productions;
- the study of the art of the theater; and
- the encouragement of original dramatic works among it members.
In February of 2004, Peoria Players produced the stunning musical RAGTIME. The production ran for nine sold-out performances (three of them were holdovers), and featured a Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow which presented in the background of the set the characters and landmarks showcased in RAGTIME. The cast and crew was made up of over 70 of Peoria’s finest performers, musicians, and technicians.
