The Roadside Theater, US Army Garrison Heidelberg, AACT Region X |
Roadside Theater is an amateur community theater provided by the US Forces stationed overseas. For over 45 years, we have provided a full schedule of theater-related programs for servicemen and their families, civilians, and their invited guests in and around the Heidelberg area. Our volunteer actors, directors and technicians are made up of US Forces active duty personnel stationed here (Army, Air Force, etc), US Civilians (teachers, civil servants) and their friends and families, as well as many friends from in and around the city of Heidelberg.
Our primary goal is to provide our community members the opportunity to see a variety of outstanding, high-quality theater productions. We also provide a place to learn and practice skills in all areas of the performing arts. Additionally, we help develop international relations, cultural exchange and diversity through the participation of local citizens of many nationalities and races.
Our program is similar to any community theater you'd find in the USA or anywhere else. We offer a full season of comedies, dramas and musicals, as well as Shakespeare in the Park, children's theater workshops, concerts and special events (Black History Month celebrations, etc), as well as Fine Arts Festivals, the AACT Region 10 One-Act Festival, and acting and directing workshops.
We presented the American Community Theater World Premiere of "Les Miserables," "Wit" and "In The Beginning;" the European Premieres of "The Will Rogers Follies," "Putting It Together," and "Goodbye Girl;" and the European Continental Premiere of two Tennessee Williams plays. Our productions consistently win awards at regional competitions and festivals. We have twice competed in the US National AACT One-Act Festival, and sent productions to international festivals (e.g. Edinburgh, Scotland; Dundalk, Ireland). In October, 2001, Roadside was presented with the Secretary of the Army's "Irving Berlin Award" for outstanding theater programming.
