Eastern Oregon University Theatre Program

For seventy-six years, the Eastern Oregon University Theatre Program has been presenting the highest quality theatrical productions as part of our students’ academic training. What began in 1929 as a theatre club has grown into a vibrant and ever-expanding theatre arts training program. The current mission statement expresses our philosophy:

“The EOU Theatre Program offers a student centered community of artists whose major focus is creativity and collaboration. Our aim is to stimulate and nurture artists who are willing to give the gift of their talents to the audience. A hands-on academic and production oriented curriculum celebrates theatre as a voice and a mirror for cultural values of all human beings. As a part of a highly motivated arts community, students work with master artists/teachers in a rigorous program of study and production that prepares majors for graduate work in the discipline, teaching, or other creative activity.”

Each year, as part of our student training program, we present a season of 7-8 full-length, fully-realized productions, including selections from the classical works of the Greeks or Shakespeare, musical theatre pieces that ranges from contemporary works such as “Urinetown, the Musical” to the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan and contemporary dramas and comedies by current playwrights including Neil LaBute and Martin McDonagh.

Our small but energetic program guarantees each student a full range of theatrical opportunities both on stage and back stage. We offer courses in performance, production, and design. Our program includes eight concentrations: Performance, Directing, Stage Management, Scenic, Lighting and Costume Design, Playwriting, and Theatre Pedagogy.

Eastern Oregon University is nestled in the beautiful Grande Ronde Valley completely surrounded by scenic mountain ranges. It’s climate includes four distinct seasons, so if your interests include anything from skiing and snow boarding to hiking and fishing to photographing the beauty of nature, you’ll find it here at EOU.
