Children’s Musical Theater San Jose (CMT) is dedicated to using musical theater to nurture and educate the youth of today to become the artists, patrons, and leaders of tomorrow. CMT was founded in 1968 to meet the need in San Jose for a community-based children’s theater. Today, CMT is one of the largest theatrical performing and training organization of its kind in the nation. CMT is especially proud of its recent string of honors including: a National Endowment for the Arts Access to Artistic Excellence grant: A unique and impressive honor for any theater company, especially one exclusively serving young performers.
In the course of 38 years CMT has played a significant role in cultivating relationships with young audiences and young theater artists. CMT takes special pride in its success at providing the arts programs on which educators, community leaders, and parents have become increasingly dependent for teaching San Jose’s children communication skills, self-confidence, and tolerance. CMT is known nationwide for the unique policy of casting every child who auditions. CMT annually serves nearly 9,000 students and performers, ages 4-20, in its Production Workshops, Conservatory classes, and in-school arts education and outreach programs. CMT’s signature work continues to be its four annual Mainstage (ages 14-20) and four annual Rising Star (ages 6-13) productions, offering quality musical theater performances for family audiences in downtown San Jose’s 500-seat Montgomery Theater.
CMT presents Broadway classics, challenging world-class modern musical theater productions, traditional children’s theater works, and self-produced new works. CMT double-casts both the lead and ensemble roles to provide every child who auditions the opportunity to participate. The theater staff is dedicated to applying high artistic standards to create a professional theater experience for both its young performers and its audience, which exceeds 40,000 annually.
