Weaver Elementary School is a fourth through eighth grade school in Merced, California.
Although the school has been open for more than fifty years, the Weaver Elementary Performing Arts Department has only been in existence since 1999. It all began with one teacher offering a club as an after school activity for fourth and fifth grade students. In its first year the club performed “It’s a Hard Knock Life” from the musical Annie in the school talent show.
Over the years the club has grown to include students in the higher grades and was renamed the Weaver Performing Arts Department. Currently, there are ten teachers that volunteer as directors, music director, costume designer, set designer and builder, prop master, lighting and sound designers, and business manager in the production of performing arts department shows. In the past three years, the Weaver Elementary Performing Arts Department has performed Annie Jr., Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and in May 2006, Disney’s Cinderella Kids. Through these productions, the Weaver Performing Arts Department has gained a reputation for high quality, entertaining shows.
Weaver students enjoyed presenting Disney’s Cinderella Kids to classmates, parents, and friends. By the end of the run of seven shows, students were asking the most important question: “What are we doing next year?”
